Nothing is more frustrating than trying to capture the perfect shot, only to find your phone’s camera won’t focus—or worse, the image is just a blur. At Boston Mobile Phone Repairs, we often see customers with camera-related issues on both iPhones and Android phones. Here’s how to troubleshoot the problem before it ruins your next photo op.
There are several reasons your smartphone camera might not focus properly:
Dirty or smudged lens
Software glitches or outdated apps
Low light or bad focusing conditions
Dropped phone causing misaligned lens or internal damage
Malfunctioning camera app or background processes
Hardware failure in the lens module
Use a microfiber cloth or lens wipe to gently clean the rear and front lenses. Even a fingerprint can throw off focus.
Open your camera app and tap the area you want to focus on. This forces the camera to recalibrate its focus.
Sometimes a simple reboot can clear background apps or temporary software bugs.
For Android: Google Play Store > Manage Apps > Update Camera & System Apps
For iPhone: Settings > General > Software Update
Go to Settings > Apps > Camera > Storage > Clear Cache
Sometimes your case or a scratched lens protector may interfere with the lens.
If none of the above methods work, the issue may be hardware-related:
Internal lens misalignment
Stabilizer failure (OIS issue)
Cracked lens or sensor damage
